Director Rev. Kenshin H. Ishii

Rev. Kenshin H. Ishii came to the U.K. in 2006 and was appointed as the Deputy Director of Three Wheels, Since then, he has supported the former Director, Rev. Kemmyo Sato, while contributing to the growth of Three Wheels’ activities. In April 2024, he became the Director of Three Wheels following Rev. Sato’s retirement.

Rev. Ishii often emphasises:

“While the teachings of Buddhism and the Shin Buddhist (jp: Jodo Shinshu) tradition are readily accessible through books and the Internet, the greater challenge for those who have encountered Buddhism lies in how they receive and internalise those teachings. Being in a traditional Sangha means learning how to absorb and apply the teachings of the Nenbutsu through being illuminated by the words and behaviour of our teachers and fellow Dharma friends. It is only when Buddhism is properly digested and practiced that it truly begins to function within oneself.”

Through his formal and informal talks, drawing from his own experiences within the Shogyoji and Three Wheels Sanghas, Rev. Ishii shares his insights into how we can receive and practice the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Nenbutsu, Therefore, his Dharma talks are always rooted in repentance and gratitude, expressing the understanding he has been given during his daily life in the Sangha where he has been given the awareness of being in oneness with others in Interdependent Origination.

Venerable Keimei Takehara

The 16th Head Priest of Shogyoji

Born into Shogyoji Temple as the son of the former head priest, Venerable Master Chimyo Takehara, Venerable Keimei Takehara was immersed in the life of the Sangha from a young age. He pursued his higher education at Shin Buddhism department of Otani University in Kyoto Japan and went on to earn a Master’s degree from SOAS in London.

During the founding of Three Wheels and the creation of its Zen Garden, he spent time in the U.K., actively supporting these formative projects. Even after marriage, he returned to Three Wheels, where he remained for a year and a half, playing a crucial role in the early establishment of its sangha.

Upon returning to Japan, he served as the director of the Tokyo branch into his early 30s before transitioning back to Shogyoji Temple. During this period, he worked closely with Venerable Master Chimyo Takehara, engaging with all Sangha members with genuine inclusiveness.

In the spring of 2024, he was formally appointed as the 16th Head Priest of Shogyoji. Standing in the presence of Amida Buddha, he carries the collective karma of all Dharma friends across Japan and the U.K., a weighty responsibility that has earned him the profound trust and respect of the entire Shogyoji community.

Venerable Takehara’s deepest aspiration is to guide each person in their spiritual growth, helping them to awaken to their own karma while also realizing Amida’s unconditional love and compassion. Rather than simply providing answers, he offers gentle guidance and insightful hints, encouraging individuals to discover their path to awareness of one’s own karmic existence and Unconditional Love and Compassion of Amida Buddha.
