Invitation to the 166th London Eza

It is with great pleasure that I am writing once again to invite you to the 166th London Eza, to be held at Three Wheels from 1:00 pm on Sunday 29 October 2023.

This forthcoming Eza will incorporate Otorikoshi, an annual event at which we express our deepest gratitude to Shinran Shonin, the Founder of our tradition, for all he has done for us. Although some of us are still concerned by the threat of Covid, I would like to hold this important meeting not solely online but rather in a hybrid format, to make actual face to face meetings possible once more. Personal encounter with another individual, whether teacher or friend, is essential to the awakening of faith that Shinran Shonin teaches is the most crucial experience of our lives.

In order to celebrate what is essentially the most important event of the year, Professor Masahiro Shimoda is coming over to London to deliver a talk entitled On the Concept of “Non-obstruction among Individual Phenomena”. The notion of “non-obstruction among individual phenomena” – or jiji-muge事事無礙 in Japanese – is the very source of “Harmony within Diversity”, the motto of the Three Wheels Sangha. As this is also the main theme of The Avataṃsaka Sūtra, so beloved by my teacher, D. T. Suzuki, I am particularly looking forward to Professor Shimoda’s talk and fully expect that it will help clarify the foundations of our Sangha.

Dharma friends of Three Wheels are also holding an annual event “Remembering John” on 5 November 2023. This will actually be the second memorial service (jp:san-kaiki) for Professor John White who, ever since his first encounter with Venerable Chimyo Takehara at Shogyoji in Japan in 1992, laboured tirelessly to bring about the establishment of Three Wheels and continued to support our organisation in every way for thirty years until he passed away peacefully at Three Wheels on 6 November 2021. This memorial service will start at Three Wheels at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday 5 November.

We are all much looking forward to seeing you at Three Wheels, whether in person or via Zoom.

Yours sincerely

Kemmyo Taira Sato
