No.3 On Listening to the Nembutsu

It is not because of oneself that one listens to the nembutsu (Namu Amida Butsu). It’s not because of others that one listens to the nembutsu.  It is not because of any combination of one’s karmic conditions and the karmic conditions of others that one listens to the nembutsu. But of course, it is not without cause that one listens to the nembutsu. Accordingly one comes “to think of the Buddha (nembutsu).” The true meaning of nembutsu lies in reverence and gratitude.

 

 

念佛は、自らよりどころとして聞くのではない。他によって聞くのでもない。自他の因縁が寄り合って聞くのでもない。無論、原因なしには聞けない。
従って念佛である。そのこころは、敬いであり、感謝である。
