Invitation to the London Eza

Once again, I am writing with great pleasure to invite you to the 150th London Eza to be held online at Three Wheels on Sunday 6 December 2020 at 2:00 pm. Time flies by so fast and this online meeting will in fact be the final one for this year.

After careful discussion, we have decided to go back to holding our London Eza meetings – but only online for now until the threat of Covid 19 has subsided.

As many of you will know, following the publication of 5-7-5 The Haiku of Basho in 2018two further Haiku books, 5-7-5 The Haiku of Buson and 5-7-5 The Haiku of Issa translated by Professor John White and myself, were published in November 2019 by The Buddhist Society, using the same format.

Fortunately, and despite the very difficult circumstances in which we all find ourselves these days, Professor White has kindly agreed to give a talk entitled Buddhism and Haiku at this our forthcoming online London Eza. You will find a talk studded with profound insights and ideas concerning the relationship between Buddhism and haiku and further enriched by Professor White’s own intriguing interpretations of the poetry of Basho, Buson and Issa, the greatest poets of the Edo Period. Please do not miss this unique opportunity to listen to his exceptionally interesting online lecture.

This December Eza will also mark the second anniversary of the death of my wife, Hiroko, “Shakyamuni’s Disciple, Good Nun of Wonderful Seed”. Please join us at this annual online service to remember Hiroko who, surrounded by the pure and selfless love of all of you Dharma friends, departed for the Pure Land quietly and peacefully with silent smiles of gratitude on her face.

I am looking forward to this great opportunity to see you all again.

Yours sincerely

Kemmyo Taira Sato
