In The Commentary on [Vasubandhu’s] Treatise on the Pure Land by T’an-Luan, the relationship between ‘Compassion’ and ‘Taking Refuge’ is described as follows, ‘When a bodhisattva comes to find a sentient being empty and false [in spirit], there arises very naturally a true compassion within the bodhisattva, and when the sentient being comes to know the Dharma-body of the bodhisattva, there arises very naturally the true mind of taking refuge [in the Dharma-body] within the sentient being.’

曇鸞大師の浄土論註においては、｢衆生が虚妄であることを知れば、菩薩にはおのずから真実の慈悲が生じる。また、真実の法身を知れば、自ら真実の帰依が起こる｣と慈悲と帰依の関係が述べられています。
