As you know, the late Professor John White supported Shogyoji Temple and Three Wheels for 29 years and designed the Zen garden that we all love so much.
Professor White first visited Shogyoji Temple in 1992, when he was serving as Pro Provost of University College London (UCL). During this visit, he had a profound spiritual encounter with the Venerable Master Chimyo Takehara, who was then the Head Priest of Shogyoji. Following this encounter, Professor White became involved in the establishment of Three Wheels and went on to make an invaluable contribution to its development and activities over the following years.
During this time, he gave over 30 talks at Shogyoji Temple, 29 of which are now publicly available for everyone to access and read.
At our annual gathering, Remembering John, held at the beginning of November, we read his talks together with our Dharma friends, reflect on the teachings he shared with us, and express our gratitude by reciting the Nenbutsu.
Rather than simply reading his talks individually, we hope to create a space where we can share our thoughts, listen to one another, and continue exploring the deeper intentions and aspirations expressed in his words.
We warmly invite you to join us in remembering John, engaging with the precious thoughts he left behind, and reciting the Nenbutsu together in gratitude.
We look forward to welcoming you.
With best wishes,
Rev. Kenshin Ishii
Director, Three Wheels
